I have already started book two in the series Scardown. I loved the idea of an older woman heroine and just had to read for that reason. What is new and refreshing is the way that Bear tells this story. The time is in the future - 2062 and Global Warming has happened and the world is full of wars about water and land.

The first novel in the "Jenny Casey" series was great escapist reading. If you liked the Ancillary series read this series. She is Canadian and Canada figures prominently in this series, and I can only say this novel WOWed! me. I did some research and found out Bear has a substantial list of works. I had not heard about Bear until I got a blurb about a new novel by her that is published by TOR. I am on a science fiction reading jag ever since I read the Ancillary series by Ann Leckie. Dick will want to be HAMMERED by Elizabeth Bear.Hammered by Elizabeth Bear is a fine piece of science fiction writing. Still, fans of deep, character-driven, dark, futuristic, investigative tales along the lines of Philip K. The exposing of the conspiracy is fun to follow although readers will have difficulty accepting how relatively easily Jenny obtains information since the highest levels of Canadian government are involved (who was on Cheney's energy taskforce?). The cast and the future Internet make readers believe that they are in the latter half of the twenty-first century. This is a dark, urban noir science fiction starring a fabulous anti-heroine who has no hopes, no dreams, and no future. Soon the investigation turns deadlier and seemingly reaches the higher levels of her government. She has no hope of learning the truth, but Jenny has lived for decades without hope. This brings her to the attention of those who want her dead and others who want to lab rat her. Kids are dying and though Jenny would prefer to remain in hiding, she reluctantly makes inquiries on the mean streets and on the Internet. Hyperex, a special drug made exclusively for the American and Canadian armies, has made it to the streets. Razorface, carrying a HAMMERED teen, kicks at Jenny's door at just past three in the morning.
